How We Research
Every guide on Rolled On starts with one question: will this cover fit your truck and suit the way you use the bed? That means your pickup, its model year and bed length, and what you carry back there.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with the truck
A cover made for a 5.5 ft F-150 bed won't fit a 5.8 ft Sierra bed. Even the same truck can change rails or tailgate shape between model years.
We check the model years, bed length and any limits the maker names, such as bed rail systems, cargo boxes or bed caps. When a detail could change the fit, we tell you what to measure.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at the cover style (roll-up, tri-fold, quad-fold, hard folding or retractable), the materials, the frame, how it clamps on and how it seals. We also note whether it drains water, whether it locks and how much of the bed it opens.
Makers describe their covers in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.
3. We look at owner feedback
We read what owners report after living with a cover. We look for patterns, like leaks at the tailgate, loose clamps, sagging vinyl, fading and hard-to-open latches.
One bad review doesn't sink a cover. A pattern does.
4. We score each cover
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A cover that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Covers change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell near-identical covers under different part numbers for each truck, so we check the fit line on every pick and only link new units.
We skip covers with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not road tests. We don't claim to have mounted every cover we write about.
A cover that isn't clamped down right can lift or come off at speed. Follow the maker's install steps, check the clamps after the first few drives and never call any cover theft-proof.
